Study to prove thyself approve unto God!

study prove thyself approve unto god

By Ms. Rita Monk

This was my school motto. What does it mean?
It means to educate yourself in such a way that you become an individual that God has planned. A person with principles, helpful to the people around, useful to the society and at the same time should be able to mould the surrounding in a way which is healthy.

We live in a country where our belief in God is very strong, so helping his creation is the highest form of worship which we can offer to Him. Education is the backbone of any civilized society.

To achieve the goal of education in this ever increasing race of competition we should not miss to stress on life skills and the value of life. With the changing times our approach to education should also change, therefore to impart life skills/social skills becomes important as it prepare responsible citizen who moulds our society. Man is a social animal and to impart life skills or social skills becomes the need of the society. The following are the life skills or social skills;

  • Self awareness
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Empathy
  • Creative thinking
  • Interpersonal relationship
  • Coping with stress and Effective communication

All these skills help the students to face challenges of life and overcome it. It helps the students to connect with the community through exploring, evolving and engaging. ‘‘Those with high interpersonal intelligence communicate effectively and empathize easily with others’’ according to Gardner American psychologist. It is very alarming to see the percentage of suicide and crime amongst the teenagers in our country. So it becomes all the more important to impart life skill or social skills along with education.

According to Aristotle,‘‘education is process of creation of sound mind in a sound body’’. Pestolozi, a Swiss educational reformer said ‘‘education is a natural, progressive and systematic development of all the forces. It distinguishes human being from other creations. The process of education is not only self- realization of the individual but it is also to bring into action the potential in man’’.

We should aim not only to educate a child but also help in overall development of a child’s personality. According to Gardner, "We have this myth that the only way to learn something is to read it in a textbook or hear a lecture on it. And the only way to show that we've understood something is to take a short-answer test or maybe occasionally with an essay question thrown in. But that's nonsense. Everything can be taught in more than one way." – Howard Gardner, 1997.

We are the country with the highest number of young people. As a young nation we have so much of potential. Let’s not waste it!

a-teacher-takes-a-head-opens-a-mind-and-touches-a-heartThe other most important pillar of education system is a teacher. A teacher is a foundation on which our education system stands. Therefore, selection of teachers or educators should be done with utmost care as they are responsible for moulding a child which is the highest and the greatest responsibility. They have a lasting impression on students. Not only the child is under their care but they also have a role of a counsellor to both the child and the parent. A good communication with the teacher not only helps the student but also builds a trust with the parent.

Therefore as educators it’s our duty and responsibility to strengthen the young mind of our country and inculcate the values of life. Thus the role of the educator is very important and so does the entire educational system.

Society is a mirror that reflects the standard of its education system. Poor education produces poor work force and cannot be trained for high skill, high productive jobs, resulting in lack in certain areas of development which again triggers a big problem of providing basic infrastructure to its people and many more problems as a chain reaction.

Education liberates one’s mind. Therefore, let us all work together to impart quality education and pledge to make sincere efforts to mould our young minds with the highest standards of education possible as they are going to reap the benefits of what we invest in today.

"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world", Nelson Mandela.
